Dennis Howard Marks was a former Welsh drug smuggler turned writer and performer. He rose to prominence in the mid-1990s following the publication of his autobiography, Mr. Nice. Marks was born on August 13, 1945, in Kenfig Hill, Wales. His father, Dennis, worked as a Merchant Navy captain and his mother, Edna, was a teacher. Marks attended the Garw Grammar school in Pontycymer. He studied physics at Balliol College, Oxford. He continued his education at the University of London and later the University of Sussex.
Marks was first introduced to marijuana while attending Balliol College, Oxford. He began using and selling the drugs to people in his circle. After making several connections, Marks took the operation internationally. By 1972, he was averaging thousands of dollars per shipment. He was arrested in 1973 but skipped bail in 1974. He lived briefly in Italy before returning to England in 1974. Marks operated under numerous aliases most notable ‘Donald Nice’. He’s done business with various groups including the CIA, IRA, MI6, and the Mafia. Marks was arrested in 1988 and extradited to the United States. He was convicted by the DEA and sentenced to 25 years at Terre Haute. He was granted parole in 1995 after serving seven years.
CAREER
In 1996, Marks published his autobiography, Mr. Nice. The book was an international bestseller and has since been translated into several languages. It was adapted into a 2010 film directed by Bernard Rose. Marks followed up with Howard Marks’ Book of Dope Stories (2001), Senor Nice: Straight Life From Wales to South America (2006), and Sympathy for the Devil (2011). He’s also appeared in films like Human Traffic (1999) and I Know You Know (2009).

Howard Marks died on April 10, 2016, at the age of 70. His reported cause of death was bowel cancer. It was first revealed in January 2015 that he was battling inoperable cancer.
