ORIGIN
Tony Burton was an American actor, boxer and comedian. He played the role of Tony “Duke” Evers alongside Sylvester Stallone in the Rocky films. He was born Anthony Burton on March 23, 1937 in Flint, Michigan. He attended Flint Northern High School where he played football and baseball for the Vikings team. In 1954, Burton was named to the All City and All Valley teams as a halfback. He also led the Vikings baseball team to a championship title. He graduated in 1955.

CAREER
Burton made his amateur boxing debut after completing high school. He won the Flint Golden Gloves light heavyweight championship in 1955 and again in 1957. Burton fought professionally for a year from 1958-1959. He was 6ft tall and weighed in at 200 pounds during his boxing career. He was inducted into the Greater Flint Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.

As an actor, Burton started out doing bit roles at various Los Angeles theater companies. He played “Don Chastain” in the 1974 film, The Black Godfather. In 1976, he was cast as “Duke” (Apollo Creed’s manager, trainer, and friend) in the sports drama film, Rocky. Other films include Assault on Precinct 13, The Shining, Exorcism, and Hack!.

Tony Burton died on February 25, 2016 at the age of 78. His death was confirmed by his younger sister, Loretta Kelley. Burton’s cause of death was complications of pneumonia. He was married to “Rae Burton” and they had a son, Martin, who passed away in 2014. Tony Burton had a net worth of $500 thousand.
